Please select the testing location based on your current address and download the appropriate application packet. If you are currently living in a country other than Japan or the US, and prefer testing in New York, please contact JOI before applying.

A complete application includes all 11 items listed below in addition to 4 additional sets of these 11 items (copies are fine) for a total of 5 sets. One set must have your original signature.

Activity List
Please list eight activities, lessons, presentations, or speeches you could give if you were selected as a JOI coordinator. Your audience may be members of Japan affiliated organizations, elementary through college students or teachers, children who are part of a reading club at local libraries, adult community members of Rotary or other clubs.

Essay Questions
Please respond to these questions in one-page, using 1000-1200 characters for responses in Japanese or 400-500 words for responses in English.
  5) One goal of JOI is to nurture and train Japanese to become leaders in grassroots exchange/cooperation. If you are selected to participate in JOI, how do you hope this experience will affect your future career goals? Why should you be selected to participate? (Please respond in formal Japanese.)
  6) What is the most challenging cross-cultural experience you have had? How did you overcome this challenge? From this experience, describe your views on cross-cultural exchange and international understanding. (Please respond in Japanese, in your own voice.)
  7) What aspects of Japan would you like to introduce to people in the U.S.? (Please respond in English.)
  8) Currently, Japan is said to be very successful at exporting contemporary culture such as fashion, anime and manga. What do you think are the positive and negative aspects regarding this type of export? (Please respond in English.)
  9) Please tell us about yourself including hobbies, interests, community activities, etc. (Please respond in English.)
