Welcome to JALEX! The Japanese Language Exchange (JALEX) Program was an educational exchange program funded by The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership and administered by The Laurasian Institution. Current Status of The JALEX Program: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Japanese Language Exchange (JALEX) program has been honored to have nine successful years in which to positively impact the field of Japanese language learning in the United States. During this time the program has made 609 assistant teacher placements and impacted the lives of thousands of students, host families, and the communities in which they served. The JALEX program has been made possible with the generous funding and support of The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership. Unfortunately, with the prolonged economic downturn in Japan, The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership has determined that continued sponsorship of JALEX is financially unfeasible. The Laurasian Institution has also been engaged in fund raising activities in order to continue the program but these have been unsuccessful. Therefore, the JALEX program will be canceled at the completion of its ninth year, June 30, 2001. This means that there will be no new JALEX assistant teacher or placement site recruiting or this year. We regret this outcome and any negative impact the cancellation has on the many individuals, institutions and schools that have participated in or supported this worthwhile program. Both The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership and The Laurasian Institution will continue to support Japanese language and cultural study through their respective grants and programs.
