| About
The C-corp, Jr. program will be administered by The Laurasian Institution
(TLI) in cooperation with offices in Seattle and China.
The
mission of the C-Corps, Jr. program is to build greater mutual understanding
of the cultures of the United States and China among the American
and Chinese participants in the high school community.
With
China headed toward becoming one of the world's largest ecnonomies
during this century, the teaching of the Mandarin Chinese language
is suddenly growing in American schools. Currently, there are nearly
800 pre-collegiate schools wiht Chinese language programs. The C-corps,
Jr. program expects the exchange students to share in the learning
of Chinese and Chinese culture with their peers and in turn receive
assistance from the American students with their English language
work. The structure of this program will enable participants to
contribute to the host school by being a lively and engaged "student
cultural ambassador."
Since
1990, The Laurasian Institution has facilitated the study of and
travel to Japan for over 2000 students and teachers at the pre-collegiate
level through the New Perspectives program. Also, we have brought
over 100 pre-collegiate students from other nations to the United
States as exchange students through our Cultural Resource Programs
touted by participants as one of the best in the exchange field.
In order to extend a similar opportunity to students in China, The
Laurasian Institution (TLI) and The China Scholarship Council (CSC)
have joined efforts to bring a select group of pre-collegiate students
from China to become high school exchange students in the United
States through the C-corps, Jr. program. This program is designed
as a high-quality, academic year study abroad program to the United
States for Chinese secondary school students. All Chinese exchange
students will be guaranteed a placement in public or private schools
with good academic standards. All host schools are recognized by
the appropriate educational authorities in the United States and
have Chinese language programs.
To
ensure that the mission of the program is achieved, a unique feature
of C-corps, Jr. program is that the Chinese exchange students are
contributing to enhance of the host schools' Chinese language program.
As a native, teenage Chinese speaker, the Chinese exchange student
attends one Chinese language class per day at the host school, sharing
contemporary Chinese language and culture, thereby enhancing his
or her American peers' efforts to learn about China. In exchange,
the exchange student's understanding of American culture and its
educational system will be improved through his/her unique role
as a cultural bridge. This allows for meaningful sharing to occur
between the exchange student and American students.
